Paint magnifies whatever is under it. A patch that has not been feathered wide enough shows as a halo in daylight, a taped seam that was never sanded flat throws a shadow, and a water stain that was painted over comes back through within weeks. Getting the substrate right is not a preliminary to painting — it is most of the reason a finished wall looks good.

Find the cause first
A recurring crack or a stain usually has a reason. We identify whether something structural or a leak needs attention before we close it up.

Cut back to sound material
Loose compound, soft board and failed tape are removed rather than filled over.

Tape and coat
Joints are taped and built up in coats, each one wider than the last, so the repair blends into the plane of the wall.

Feather and sand flat
Sanded with a light held across the surface, which is the only reliable way to see a repair that still stands proud.

Match the texture
Where the surrounding surface is textured, we match it — or skim the wall smooth if you prefer the flat look.

Prime and paint
Every repair is primed. Bare compound absorbs differently from painted wall, and skipping this is exactly why patches ghost through a finish coat.
Timeline & pricing
Compound has to dry between coats, so repairs are usually spread over more than one visit before painting starts. Your estimate lays out the visits and where the painting fits in.
Materials we use
Setting and lightweight joint compounds appropriate to the repair, paper or mesh tape as the joint requires, and a stain-blocking primer where water damage or smoke is involved.

Questions
Drywall Repair FAQs
Can you repair plaster, not just drywall?
Yes. A lot of housing in Chicago, Evanston and Park Ridge is plaster over lath, and it needs different handling — re-keying loose sections, bonding agents and skim coating rather than simply screwing in a patch.
Why do the same cracks keep coming back?
Usually movement. A crack that reopens above a door or at a corner is telling you something is flexing, and filling it again will not change that. We look for the cause and use a repair method suited to a joint that moves.
Can you match my ceiling or wall texture?
In most cases yes — we match common orange peel and knockdown textures. Where a match would be obvious anyway, skimming the whole surface flat often looks better than a patch that is nearly right.
Do I need to repaint the whole wall after a repair?
Usually the whole wall, corner to corner, rather than the patch alone. Spot-painting a repair leaves a visible difference in sheen even when the color matches exactly.
